Part 3 of 3.

In the first part of this article, we provided some background information about the importance of taking control of your career, and compared it to managing a checking account.  In part two, we provided the first two tips in taking charge of your career.  In today’s third part, we’ll provide the remaining tips you can implement today, to ensure YOU are in control of your career – and not the other way around.

3.  Always have a back-up plan.

This economy has served as an excellent lesson in making us all understand the necessity of having a plan B.  If your goal is to become an elementary teacher this calendar year, and every public school in the state has a hiring freeze, how do you accomplish your goal?  Simple, you implement your alternative plan until which time you can resume pursuing your original goals.  You may choose to return to school to obtain your doctorate, perhaps substitute teach in your district or even relocate out of state.  Whatever the case, have a contingency plan ready to implement, if necessary.

4.  Get involved in the local community.

Whether you choose to join the Toastmaster’s Club, the Chamber of Commerce, or get involved in local politics, the more involved you are, the more likely you are acquiring new skills you can utilize in your career.  By the way, employers find your involvement in activities outside of work very attractive, when making hiring decisions.

5.  Volunteer with a target employer before deciding whether they are a good fit for you.

Every company is different.  Their mission, purpose, vision, and management philosophies all vary greatly.  What works best and is considered a “dream company” to one person can be interpreted as a nightmare to someone else.  Do your own research, and assess each target company’s merits based on only your personal needs.

Candidates who fail to manage their career are, in essence, slaves to a J-O-B.  Take control, stay proactive, and remain in charge of your professional life.
