How to Get Started in a Work From Home Career

Working from home creates new opportunity and challenge.

The number of people who worked at home increased by nearly 2 million, from about 9.5 million in 1999 to about 11.3 million in 2005, according to new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. Nearly half of these home workers had college degrees and nearly half of them earned $75,000 a year or more.

While the telecommute choice becomes more popular on a national basis, many job seekers find these opportunities are rarely advertised, and fill very quickly.  For the individual who wants to explore the option of working from home, here are some tips to help them become set up for their new job, and advice on getting started.

Have a fully-functional, home office.

Employers who hire professionals to work from their home, expect the individual to be ready for the opportunity before they hire them.  A candidate can set up their office in a quiet room that has a desk or table, comfortable chair, computer with high-speed Internet access, printer, and telephone.  Depending on the position, the employer may require access to a land-line telephone, fax service, and specific software programs. 

Update the resume objective to include working from home.

A prospective employer will not know a job seeker has the ability to work from home, unless their objective statement on the resume indicates it.  Here is an example of an objective statement for an individual interested in obtaining a work from home position:

Objective Statement Example #1:  “To become an active contributor to Company ABC’s virtual customer service team.”

Objective Statement Example #2:  “To extend a consultative sales approach to Company ABC’s client base, while working from my home office.”

Not only is it imperative for the job seeker to update their resume accordingly, it is equally important for the individual to create a customized cover letter that reflects their interest and willingness to work from their home office.

Analyze the savings derived from working at home.

Outside of the interview and possible training that may require a home-based worker to go to the office, employees and contractors who work from their house experience a large savings in gasoline expenses, child care costs, eating out, and work attire.  Each individual candidate must weigh out the pros and cons of working from their home, versus providing service from a company’s brick and mortar location.
