Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupér

I had dinner with some friends the other night and we got to talking about their daughter looking for a job. Fresh out of college, she thinks that one of the interviews may come through. Problem is that they don’t offer medical, but no one seemed concerned, they were just happy if she gets the job. Such is the tough job market. Now many of us take for granted that we will get medical, decent pay and vacation at our jobs. The Best Companies go well beyond the basics. They each provide some additional value in the form of benefits or actions that help make them one of the Best.

  • General Mills – Ranked at 90 (up from 99 last year), General Mills is best known for Betty Crocker, Häagen-Dazs, Pillsbury, Green Giant, Old El Paso and Cheerios brands. Their career page has links on the left for Job Search, Campus Events, Explore Careers and more. The middle of the page has a general overview of products. Clicking on Explore Careers will list all of the job functions at the company. Click on Job Search to register on the site or select search openings at the bottom which will return a search engine. Looks like you must register on the site in order to search their job openings.
  • Bright Horizons – Ranked 89th on this year’s list, this company is “the world’s leading provider of employer-sponsored child care, back-up care, early education, and work/life solutions”. Their career page is fairly busy but still is very well done, “Careers at Bright Horizons” is on the left hand side of the page and has links to Benefits, Top ten reasons to work there, Career Options and more. The right hand side of the page has Search Jobs and Apply, upcoming events, highlighted positions and a link to Career Events. Center page is a small video. Clicking on Search Jobs and Apply links to a page with a listing of job categories (Teaching, Leadership, Administrative and Corporate). There were over 450 job opportunities on their site when I checked.
  • KPMG – KPMG is a audit, tax and advisory firm and is ranked 88 on this year’s list. With over 21,000 employees globally, they lost over 1,500 people last year. The main page of their career site is split between Experienced Hires and Campus Hires. Clicking on the Experienced Hires link leads to a career page which includes an overview of the company, how to build a career at the company and job opportunities. Click on “search current openings” to link to the search page. You can add a profile, post your resume and search for jobs. There were thousands of job opportunities when I checked the site.
  • National Instruments – This software company was ranked 87 (down from 69) and has more than 2,500 employees in the US and 2,600 non-US employees and adding 39 last year. Their main career page has company information with links on the left hand side of the page including Experienced hires, New Graduate, Intern/Co-op and more. Click on Experienced Hires and there are additional links to specific functional roles. Search for Jobs is at the bottom of the list which links to the main search engine. Here too you can register on the site.
  • Publix Super Markets – Ranked 86 on the list, Publix operates over 900 supermarkets and is employee owned. They have over 139,000 employees (that’s not a typo), hired over 1,350 people last year. Their main careers page has tabs at the top for the various types of careers at Publix. Center page is How to Apply, where there are links to various Career Opportunities Categories. There does not appear to be a link to link to their main search page any longer. You need to check individually each job type.

Good luck in your search.
