I-CareerSearch ResumesYou’re probably already a member of Facebook. In fact, this one social network alone has more than 500 million users. Seems like a pretty good opportunity to connect with prospective employers, right?

The truth is you can uncover great job opportunities across a number of social networks, like LinkedIn, Twitter, Blogs, Youtube and of course, Facebook. When it comes to the world of business, LinkedIn is the current leading network to focus on. It’s important to make sure that the information provided on your LinkedIn profile matches that of your resume, so you are ready to encounter more opportunities than ever before.

Here are the top 5 tips to make sure your profile is tweaked to perfection:

1.  Have a compelling “Professional Headline.” Use keywords that will attract the right kind of employers who are searching for you.  Some examples provided by LinkedIn are “Experienced Transportation Executive, Web Designer and Information Architect, Visionary Entrepreneur and Investor, ” etc.  It is wise to keep this headline strictly professional, and remember, LinkedIn has a keyword driven search feature.

2.  Choose the correct industry for your profile. This seems like a simple and straight-forward task to accomplish, but LinkedIn does not provide the option to choose more than one category.  So if you are a human resources professional who has worked in the healthcare space, you want to make sure you choose the appropriate category of HR/Staffing instead of healthcare.  When selecting the industry, always think of what job you perform and choose the appropriate category for it.

3.  Include a career summary and your specialties. Many profiles on LinkedIn are incomplete, and don’t include these very important sections.  I suggest candidates take the information from their professionally prepared resume, and fill it in this section.  This creates consistency, and ensures prospective employers have access to the information necessary to determine whether you are a fit for their job openings.

4.  Include a professional photo on your profile. This is one of the most important ways to customize your LinkedIn profile.  First impressions are very powerful.  If you include a favorable image of yourself, you are getting an edge over a large portion of your competition in the job market.

5.  Post relevant updates to your profile on a regular basis.  They key to LinkedIn is to connect with target employers and hiring authorities on a regular basis.  Each time you post an update to your profile, your connections are notified and can see you have made a change.  This is a great way to keep your profile fresh, and attract recruiters who may be hiring for your next job.

Social media is an excellent way for job-seekers to connect with new opportunities.  Be sure to have your hard-copy resume perfected before adding the information to LinkedIn, and then leverage this social network to uncover new career opportunities.
